Medical Refrigerators: Features and Functions

January 27, 2021

Welcome to our latest blog post. In this post, we'll discuss the features and functions of medical refrigerators.

Although they may seem identical at first glance, there are many differences between the refrigerators we use at home and medical refrigerators.

Medical refrigerators feature more advanced characteristics and functions, particularly those related to the safe storage of products.

Preliminary Considerations Regarding Medical Refrigerators

If you work in the healthcare sector, you will most likely have to use and administer medications and vaccines as part of your daily work.

In the case of vaccines, they must be kept in the «cold chain» from the time they are manufactured until they are administered to the patient.

This includes all transportation from the manufacturing laboratory to healthcare facilities or pharmacies, as well as during the time they are stored at the doctor's office before being used.

This procedure ensures that the medication or vaccine is kept at the required temperature to ensure that it is suitable for administration to patients.

Of course, we cannot allow medications and vaccines to be stored in standard refrigerators or kept alongside personal items. They must be stored in specialized medical refrigerators.

Features of Medical Refrigerators

Precise temperature control

Most medicines and vaccines are stored within a temperature range of 2°C to 8°C to maintain the cold chain during transport and storage.

Such a narrow temperature range can only be maintained accurately and reliably in medical refrigerators.

To monitor temperatures, medical refrigerators can be equipped with state-of-the-art thermometers that measure the temperature inside the vaccine as well as within the refrigeration unit.

Standard refrigerators simply cannot maintain such controlled temperatures, nor do their thermometers provide the level of accuracy offered by medical refrigerators.

Alarms that warn when temperatures exceed the range

Specialized medical refrigerators also come equipped with alarms that sound if the temperature falls outside the required range. This is vital to ensure that vaccines are not damaged or spoiled.

These alarms allow healthcare professionals to respond immediately if the temperature drops below or rises above the required range, enabling them to take steps to protect the medications.

Although the cold chain may be broken and the vaccines may still be safe, it is much better for them to remain in the cold chain at all times.

Glass door or solid door

Medical refrigerators come with additional features that can help healthcare professionals in their work. One of these features is a glass door.

Refrigerators with glass doors allow healthcare professionals to easily see inside and determine the stock levels of vaccines and medications.

This means the refrigerator does not need to be opened unnecessarily, which in turn helps maintain the entire critical temperature range.

Medical refrigerators can also be purchased with a solid door, which has the advantage of providing a little more security to prevent theft or damage.

Extra security

Medicines and vaccines are expensive and can be stolen. For this reason, these types of refrigerators come with security features, such as a lock, to prevent unauthorized access.

Of course, this not only prevents theft, but also ensures that the medical refrigerator isn't opened by accident.

Although a standard refrigerator and a medical refrigerator may seem similar at first glance, you can see that they are actually very different products, and that our vaccines will only be safe in a medical refrigerator.

Functions of a Medical Refrigerator

Laboratory refrigerators are used to cool samples for storage. They include refrigeration units for storing blood plasma, as well as vaccines and other medical or pharmaceutical supplies.

They differ from standard refrigerators used in homes or restaurants because they must be completely hygienic and fully reliable.

Laboratory refrigerators must maintain a constant temperature to minimize the risk of bacterial contamination and explosions caused by volatile materials.

To achieve a high degree of precision, this type of refrigerator requires air circulation and a fan to maintain a uniform temperature at all times. The fan turns off when the door is open to prevent cold air from escaping the unit. Laboratory refrigerators have separate compartments to prevent cross-contamination and can store specific medical supplies, such as blood or vaccines.
